Andersonville is a suburb of Chicago to the north. You can get to it by using US I-90 US I-94. The city has a population of 68,399 with a median age of 36. Andersonville is bordered by five communities. Bowmanville, Lakwood-Balmoral, Uptown, Edgewater, and Ravenswood.

History

Andersonville began when Swedish farmer immigrants settled in the area in the 1800s. This area was a huge cherry orchard at the time. A school was built in 1854 and until 1908, it was the primary school. The building of wooden homes was forbidden when the Great Chicago Fire happened in 1871. The immigrants who could not pay to have brick or stone homes built moved themselves out further north of the city. This helped the city of Andersonville grow and before long, homes were being built around Clark Street and then the commercial district of Andersonville was mostly occupied by Swedish businesses. The Swedish built churches, shoe stores, hardware stores, delis, and more.

Demographics

Andersonville is unique in that it is still mostly comprised of independent locally owned shops, boutiques, delis, and has a historic district. You will find single standing homes, townhouses, condos, and apartments. Even though there are 68 thousand people living in the area, it still maintains its quaintness. It is now considered a hot neighborhood. As well as being mostly populated by Swedish immigrants, it is also home to one of the major concentrations of gays and lesbians in the Chicago area.

Landmarks

The area is home to the Swedish American Museum that was built in 1976. There is also the Quest Theatre Ensemble. This theatre is known for its original productions that use large puppets to help bring fantasies into life. In the summer, you might find some of the cast members performing at events outdoors. Events held through the year include Junes Midsommarfest, the Wine Walk, and the Dessert Crawl.
