Old Town

Chicago’s Old Town, situated just west of the Gold Coast, has long been known as a diverse, vibrant neighborhood complete with tree-lined streets,Victorian architecture and an impressive, accessible food scene. Old Town is home to The Second City, the legendary comedy club which launched the careers of Bill Murray and Tina Fey, among many others. The neighborhood has an eclectic landscape along its main thoroughfare of Wells Street, where visitors can find gourmet dining options, a lively bar scene and high-end clothing and accessory shops.

Old Town History
Old Town was first settled in the 19th century by German immigrants who ate and planted an abundance of celery, cabbage, and potatoes, earning the neighborhood its early nickname “The Cabbage Patch.” During World War II, Chicago’s Civil Defense Agency designated North, Clark, and Ogden Avenues a “neighborhood defense unit,” which ultimately helped the area cohere as a single neighborhood. Old Town began sponsoring art fairs following the war and earned its current name in 1948, when the Old Town Triangle Association was formed to protect the neighborhood’s historic architecture. Old Town is home to St. Michael’s Church, one of seven Victorian buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Landmarks and Institutions
In addition to St. Michael’s Church, which was built in 1852, Old Town is home to the annual Old Town Art Fair, during which the works of more than 250 artists are displayed. Pipers Alley, a complex that houses The Second City, the Black Orchid Supper Club, an independent movie theater and restaurants draws locals and tourists on a nightly basis.
