River West was once considered part of River North, but in recent years it has emerged with its own distinct neighborhood identity. As more and more of the loft spaces found throughout the former industrial area are being converted and reimagined as luxury condos, the enclave is attracting young professionals in droves. River West is nestled between the Kennedy Expressway and the Chicago River, and its close proximity to Wicker Park and The Loop make it an attractive place to live for those who work downtown. River West is also home to a vibrant food scene that includes eateries such as La Scarola and the Dawson that draw diners from far and wide.

History

The area that includes River West today was first settled in the mid-19th century by immigrants from Sweden and Germany. Italian immigrants would call the neighborhood home in subsequent decades. In the early 20th century, factories, markets, and warehouses began to encroach on local farmland. The J.P. Smith Shoe Company Factory, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built here in 1912. The factories and warehouses that now make up much of River Wests housing stock underwent architectural transformations beginning in the 1980s.

Demographics

Much more recently, River West has become very popular among young, single professionals who enjoy its lively and evolving mix of bars and restaurants and the short distance from the heart of downtown Chicago. Since River West lacks an elementary school, it is less desirable for young families.

Landmarks and Institutions

River Wests most popular attraction is the United Center, home to the beloved Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks. The area also boasts the architecturally distinctive Jackson Boulevard Historic District, which includes many 19th- and early-20th-century mansions.
