Roscoe Village Real Estate
Roscoe Village is ideally situated between North Center and Lakeview on Chicagos North Side. Quiet and charming, Roscoe Village has a laid-back atmosphere and plenty of family-friendly options for local food and drink. Numerous independently owned boutiques and businesses line the streets and sell everything from antiques to clothing and accessories by independent designers, vintage treasures, and toys. Home to Antiques Row, the largest cluster of antiques shops in the Midwest, includes shops like Lazy Dog Antiques as well as Night and Day Vintage. With just over 6,000 residents, Roscoe Village has the distinct air of a small town nestled inside a large city.
History
Like much of Chicagos North Side, Roscoe Village was settled by Swedish and German immigrants in the late 19th century. The neighborhood was situated between two industrial areas, and the Great Depression stalled development in the area, keeping its skyline relatively low. Many two-story houses were built in Roscoe Village after World War II, and by the 1980s, the lofts at its industrial edges began attracting the notice of enterprising Chicagoans in search of space and natural light. The former Eversharp Pencil Factory is one of the neighborhoods condo conversions.
Demographic
Roscoe Villages housing stock is composed primarily of two- and three-story houses. While some of these structures have been divided into apartments, many have been renovated to create ideal homes for city dwellers seeking the charm and character of a smaller town.
Landmarks and Institutions
Roscoe Villages schools, including Audubon Elementary, are among the best in Chicago, making this neighborhood a top choice for young families. Its vibrant food scene is diverse, featuring everything from vegetarian and vegan dishes at Victorys Banner to leisurely brunch options at Kitschn on Roscoe and Turkish cuisine at Turquoise Cafe. The popular and annual Retro on Roscoe music festival features the music of decades past as well as food from local restaurants.
