West Loop

West Loop is a neighborhood in Chicago’s Near West Side, just west of the Chicago River and The Loop. This region of Chicago includes the neighborhoods of Fulton Market, Jackson Blvd., Greek Town, and Randolph Market, among others. The Near West Side is home to the historic Hull House (one of the most important settlement houses in the United States), the University of Illinois-Chicago, and the Illinois Medical District. The West Loop has industrial roots, and in recent years it has taken shape as a highly sought-after residential enclave. Randolph Street also known as Restaurant Row, is home to a dizzying array of some of Chicago’s most popular eateries and bars. The West Loop’s foodie-friendly scene is even more enhanced by its  proximity to Greektown. Just steps from West Loop’s main thoroughfare, Greektown  offers an array of cafes, bakeries, and restaurants serving authentic Greek delicacies like fresh tzatziki, gyros, and saganaki to name a few. With renovated loft condos, design galleries, and exceptional food and drink options, the West Loop is the urban foodie’s ideal neighborhood.

West Loop History
The West Loop has the unusual distinction of being historically diverse: before the Chicago Fire of 1871, both poor and well-to-do Chicagoans populated the community together. During the Civil War, it was known as one of the city’s most fashionable areas, and Washington Boulevard was a neighborhood high point. In the last decades of the 19th century, however, factories and warehouses were built where many of the neighborhood’s smaller, single-family homes had once stood, changing the character of the area from residential to industrial. Soon after, numerous medical facilities including Cook County Hospital and Rush Medical Center were built here. The new railroads further transformed the area, linking the West Loop to downtown Chicago and making it more commercial. Like many former urban industrial neighborhoods, the West Loop experienced a renaissance in the 1980s, when its loft spaces started to be redeveloped into spacious condos.

Landmarks and Institutions
West Loop is a vibrant and thriving place to call home, filled with art galleries, boutiques, theaters, food markets, and a culinary scene that rivals the most diverse and accomplished in the city. The neighborhood attracts antiques lovers to the Randolph Street Market once a month for an unparalleled selection of vintage decorative arts and design objects. PRIMITIVE on North Jefferson Street is one of Chicago’s most prominent galleries specializing in folk art, textiles, and jewelry from around the globe. Old St. Patrick’s Church on West Adams Street, which dates from the 1840s and features Romanesque architecture, is another of the few buildings still standing today that survived the Chicago Fire in 1871. At the University of Illinois-Chicago’s, the UIC Theatre on West Harrison Street seats 250 guests for its performances throughout the year.
