History

The West Loop has the unusual distinction of being historically diverse: before the Chicago Fire of 1871, both poor and well-to-do Chicagoans populated the community together. During the Civil War, it was known as one of the citys most fashionable areas, and Washington Boulevard was a neighborhood high point. In the last decades of the 19th century, however, factories and warehouses were built where many of the neighborhoods smaller, single-family homes had once stood, changing the character of the area from residential to industrial. Soon after, numerous medical facilities including Cook County Hospital and Rush Medical Center were built here. The new railroads further transformed the area, linking the West Loop to downtown Chicago and making it more commercial. Like many former urban industrial neighborhoods, the West Loop experienced a renaissance in the 1980s, when its loft spaces started to be redeveloped into spacious condos.

Demographic

The West Loop is one of Chicagos most enticing neighborhoods for young professionals in search of a cultured, urban lifestyle. The housing stock consists primarily of condos, and some single-family homes found in the center of the neighborhood. Chicagos top developers and real estate brokers have played a huge role in the resurgence of the West Loop proven by the stunning new luxury residential buildings that have opened or plan to open throughout the budding region.
