History

Chicagoans have been calling Lincoln Square by that name since 1925, but its history extends far beyond then. Originally an outpost of forest and prairie, Lincoln Square provided Chicago developers in the 1800s with a sought-after alternative to the dense and crowded city. It was after the Chicago Fire of 1871, when many citizens could not afford to rebuild their homes downtown according to new city codes, that a wave of settlers began moving to Lincoln Squares more affordable countryside. In more recent years, Lincoln Square has seen an influx of German immigrants whose strong heritage can be felt in many of the neighborhoods businesses.

Demographic

Lincoln Squares German and Old World heritage remains present through its rich culture of modern-day restaurants, boutiques, local coffee shops, twice-weekly Farmers Markets, and of course, the communitys Merz Apothecary, which has been running since 1875. This upscale, quiet, and safe neighborhood is currently home to Chicago families and professionals, as it boasts many of the citys elementary and high schools. A modern-day rise in shops catering to Thai and Middle Eastern cultures provides a healthy balance to the culture of the area.
