Edgewater real estate

Located seven miles from the loop on the north side of Chicago, Edgewater is the home of approximately 56,500 people. Edgewater can be divided into seven smaller neighborhoods, including Magnolia Glen, Lakewood-Balmoral, Edgewater Glen, Edgewater Beach, Edgewater, the Bryn Mawr Historic District and Andersonville. All of Edgewaters neighborhoods are connected by their love of the beach and waterfront parks. Both single-family homes and multi-unit buildings can be found in this neighborhood. Edgewater is located in close proximity to Chicagos CTA system.

History

Edgewater was given its name by John Lewis Cochran in 1885 after he built some of its first few homes. The neighborhood became famous as the only "lighted suburb" next to Chicago a few years later. In the early 1900s, Edgewaters affluence earned it a reputation as one of the most prestigious communities in the city. Mansions and large single-family homes were built throughout the neighborhood, and property values soared into the 1920s. Today, many of Edgewaters original buildings are still standing.

Demographic

Edgewater is home to many people of international origin, as well as to a significant faction of the LGBT community. In fact, the proportion of single-sex couples in Edgewater ranges from 6.6 percent to 8 percent, while the national average is only 1.1 percent. Culture in the community is heavily focused on waterfront activities. The neighborhood also features several highly-ranking public schools, along with some private schools.
