North Center real estate
Located on Chicagos North Side, North Center includes the neighborhoods of Roscoe Village, North Center, Hamlin Park, and St. Bens. With its attractive mix of leafy, residential blocks and cultural attractions, North Center is one of the fastest-growing residential enclaves in the city, offering both charming older homes and some of Chicagos loveliest new luxury condos. The area is also home to Revere Park and the Chicago River, prime spots for outdoor fun during the warmer months. Throughout the year, charming shops and great local eateries as well as busy bowling alleys and movie theaters keep the neighborhoods of North Central bustling.
History
North Center was developed at the turn of the 20th century, primarily by German immigrants working in the factories and brickyards on the industrial corridor of Ravenswood Avenue and along the Chicago River. Because the riverbanks provided so much clay, the area was for a time nicknamed Bricktown. Chicagoans hailing from Eastern and Central Europe and from Scandinavia gave North Center its characteristic Old World atmosphere as they opened bakeries, butcher shops, cafs, green grocers, and delis and built modest brick homes and ornate churches.
Demographic
North Center boasts many longtime residents as well as newcomers, many of whom have young families and are drawn by the areas history, character, and excellent schools, and by the amenities offered by luxury Chicago condos in North Center neighborhoods.
Landmarks and Institutions
North Center is home to a number of Chicago cultural attractions including the Lill Street Art Center, the American Theatre Company, and the Clark Park Boathouse, among others. Lill Street offers hands-on art instruction in ceramics, photography, book arts, and painting and drawing for adults and kids as well as an artisan shop and gallery. The American Theatre Company stages new plays each season, with a special focus on the question of what it means to be American.
